The position of a Police Trainee within the South African Police Service (SAPS) serves as the foundational entry point for operational policing under the SAPS Act, 1995 (Act No 68 of 1995).
The primary purpose of this role is to undergo intensive mental, physical, and legal development via the Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPDLP). Upon successful completion of this 24-month program, trainees are commissioned to the rank of Constable. 3. Minimum Recruitment Requirements (The Guardrails)

- Tactical & Firearm Proficiency: Attain official firearm competency (handgun, shotgun, and rifle options) and pass practical maintenance shooting tests.
- Physical Conditioning & Street Survival: Participate in daily physical conditioning, crowd control tracking, self-defense tactics, and tactical first-aid drills.
Phase B: Supervised Field Deployment (Months 11–22)
- Community Policing & Patrols: Execute physical and vehicular patrols under strict supervision within designated station sectors to boost police visibility.
- Crime Scene Management: Attend active crime scenes, establish cordons, protect physical evidence from contamination, and complete initial entries in official station registers.
- Administrative Processing: Assist in processing suspects, maintaining holding cell logs, and assisting community members at the Community Service Centre (CSC).
Phase C: Assessment & Final Integration (Months 23–24)
- Operational Competency Review: Undergo practical field evaluations and written exams at the academy to clear final placement requirements.

6. How to Apply & Submission Framework
Applications for operational SAPS trainee positions follow a strict manual submission framework.
- Form Completion: Obtain the official SAPS application form (specifically customized for the active intake year) free of charge from any local police station or via the official SAPS careers portal (
saps.gov.za/careers). The form must be completed carefully in the applicant’s own handwriting. - Oaths & Affirmations: The completed document must be signed and sworn to in the presence of an active Commissioner of Oaths.
